Halal meat is the largest single category within the global halal food industry. The OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) estimates the global halal meat trade at over $200 billion annually, driven by demand from Gulf states, Southeast Asia, North Africa, and growing Muslim populations in Europe and North America. For importers, food service chains, hotel groups, and manufacturers that use meat as an ingredient, finding the right halal meat exporter is a high-stakes sourcing decision — one where certification compliance, slaughter method, cold chain integrity, and trade documentation all matter equally.
This guide covers the world's major halal meat exporting countries by volume, what to check before buying, and how to find and vet suppliers.
Three factors drive the halal meat import decisions of major buying countries:
Brazil is the single largest exporter of halal beef globally, accounting for approximately 40% of its total beef exports under halal certification. Brazilian halal beef is certified by BPJPH (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal, Indonesia's halal authority) for the Indonesian market, and by FAMBRAS Halal and CDIAL Halal for GCC and other OIC markets. Brazil's Frigorifico (refrigerated slaughterhouse) sector includes some of the world's largest integrated beef processing facilities — JBS, Marfrig, and Minerva Foods are the major exporters with JAKIM-recognised certifications for the Malaysian market.
Brazilian halal beef exports go primarily to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Malaysia, and Indonesia. For buyers in these markets, Brazilian suppliers offer scale, competitive pricing, and established cold chain infrastructure through Santos and Paranaguá ports. For buyers in markets not listed as Brazilian certification body-approved destinations, verify MRA status before committing to a supply agreement.
Australia exports more halal lamb and mutton than any other country in the world. The Australian agricultural sector produces halal beef, lamb, mutton, and goat certified by a range of bodies including the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC), the Supreme Islamic Council of Halal Meat in Australia (SICHMA), and export-registered abattoirs under the Australian Government's official inspection system (AUS-MEAT).
Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) operates market development programs for halal-certified exporters, and Australian abattoirs exporting to Muslim-majority markets are registered on the DAFF (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) export establishment list. Australian halal lamb is the dominant imported protein in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Singapore. Grass-fed provenance and consistent grading (through AUS-MEAT) make Australian product the premium benchmark in Gulf retail.
New Zealand's halal lamb export programme, overseen by FIANZ (Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand), is one of the longest-established halal export programmes in the world. New Zealand halal beef and lamb is exported primarily to Malaysia, the UK, the Gulf, and increasingly to China. FIANZ maintains a presence in major New Zealand meat processing plants; its certification is accepted by JAKIM and most Gulf state import authorities.
New Zealand's geographic isolation and grass-based farming system mean its product occupies a premium position. Buyers seeking certified halal lamb for hotel or airline catering typically work with New Zealand exporters through established distributors in Singapore or Dubai that serve as regional consolidation points.
India is the world's second-largest beef exporter by volume, primarily exporting water buffalo meat (carabeef), not bovine beef. Indian carabeef is certified by EIC (Export Inspection Council) and exported to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa. India's halal export market is concentrated in a small number of large processing facilities registered with APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority).
A critical caveat for buyers: several Muslim-majority countries restrict or ban Indian carabeef imports on religious and political grounds. Saudi Arabia lifted its ban in 2022 but maintains specific import conditions. Malaysia and Indonesia generally accept Indian carabeef from EIC-approved facilities. Buyers must verify the current import permission status with their customs authority before placing orders.
Malaysia is a net importer of beef but a significant regional exporter of JAKIM-certified chicken and value-added halal poultry products. Malaysian halal chicken exports — processed ready-to-cook and frozen products — go primarily to Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and parts of the Middle East. Malaysian halal chicken carries the advantage of JAKIM certification: buyers in JAKIM-MRA markets do not need additional certification review.
Malaysian halal food manufacturers also export a wide range of processed and packaged halal chicken products — satay, rendang, marinated chicken, and ready meals — under JAKIM certification. These value-added products attract higher margins than commodity protein exports and are increasingly listed by international supermarket chains as part of their halal food offering.
US halal beef and poultry exports are growing as IFANCA-certified facilities expand capacity. IFANCA (Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America) has MRAs with JAKIM Malaysia and is accepted across many Gulf markets. US halal poultry is a significant export to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Canada. The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) actively supports halal-certified exporters in developing international market access.

Trade shows are the most efficient way to meet qualified halal meat exporters face-to-face. The key events are MIHAS (Malaysia International Halal Showcase, Kuala Lumpur), Gulfood (Dubai), SIAL Middle East (Abu Dhabi), and Anuga (Cologne). These events attract accredited exporters with export licences and documented certification — a higher baseline of compliance than general business directory searches.
For direct sourcing, browse the HalalExpo directory by country and food-beverage category. The trade matching system allows you to post a specific RFQ — specifying volume, certification requirement, and destination market — and receive responses from relevant suppliers.
